Grandad's Story - Final Storyboard

Final storyboard / animatic for my transcription project - "Grandad's Story".

@Phil - I did discuss Raymond Briggs with Alan in my first meeting. We talked about recreating the same tone and feeling he achieves in "When the Wind Blows". I hadn't thought about the pencil crayon / cross hatching look as the overall style. I originally wanted to give it a painterly feel reminiscent of Sylvain Chomet's the Illusionist. I think because Raymond Briggs' animations are 2D and illustrative, the thought hadn't crossed my mind, but I like it.
@Alan - Can we discuss how this would be achieved in 3D when you are next available? Would hand drawn texture maps be the way to go?

I've taken out the title sequence and the over-long cloud flying sequence. I have also (reluctantly) changed the music. I really, really wanted to keep "Michael Kamen's - Band of Brothers Suite One", I spent a long time calling people at Sony Music Classical, who put me onto NCPS and PPL to obtain a licence. They couldn't provide a joint licence which is required (apparently). However, they said if I speak to Sony Music Entertainment and seek permission from them it would be ok. Instead of going through all that hassle I found and paid for royalty free music and I'm pretty happy with it. I'm also in the process of getting a professional voice over done too.

Enough said, here it is...

Feedback required - Transcription Screenplay and Storyboard (70% complete)

Here is an update on my transcription project. I have written the screenplay and I have completed 70 % of the storyboard / animatic. I originally intended to include a narration at the beginning of the animation. When I was putting it together, I really liked it without a voice over. I added the narration and like that too. Therefore I need some feedback, both are embedded in this video..... WITH or WITHOUT the narration?

Unit 6 Pre Viz and update

So it's been a while since I've last posted but that's not to say I haven't been keeping myself busy. I've put together my pre-viz and now have a clear indication of what is left to do. I need to clean up a lot of the camera animation (it goes a bit crazy underneath the skin) and refine some textures etc. Then I'll move on to lighting and rendering, then compositing all together in after effects.

I have inserted a test render as part of my pre-viz to indicate the style i'm going for, but as stated there is a lot of refinements to do:

Here are some screenshot renders of some of the sequences:

Prev viz edited with Live footage - first 50 seconds

This is the first 50 seconds of my animation. The CG that transisitions from live footage is only a playblast and is being used to judge the camera angles / speed and movement.

I'm taking the approach of working through each scene in stages but chronologically. I will model and animate each scene, then do the lighting and rendering, then take the results into After Effects. Here is a render of the opening frame of CG action from Live action...

Final 2D storyboard

Dialogue needs to be added but here is my final 2D storyboard. I've gone for floaty camera movements and "out of" focus backgrounds to add an extra dimension. From here I plan to create detailed digital concept paintings, keeping in mind style, theme and target audience. The live footage at the start and end will hopefully be filmed next Tuesday!

Storyboard - first 40 seconds

Here is my 2D storyboard of the opening for my commission project. It will be a blend of live action (hopefully filming next week), transitioning into CG when we zoom in on the hair follicle on the arm. There is some sound but dialogue needs to be added....

Draft Storyboard and Script

Had a short break seeing family and friends, mainly to recover from Unit 4 and 5 hangovers. I've returned to find Phil has green-lit the live action intro and ending. I'm really pleased as I was able to meet with my friend who said who is able to film it next week! Exciting!! He asked me to give him as much info as possible in the form of storyboards / scripts and animatics so he can film exactly what I want. So today I knocked up some drafts....

Unit 6 Draft Script

I'm a bit embarrassed to put these images up but it is purely my thoughts on page which I can refine into a more polished version. The race is now on to produce a better version and edit it together in prem pro so filming can commence next week!!

Just from these basic images I'm already getting an idea of what I will need to make in Maya, photoshop and after effects. I literally cannot wait to dust off my graphics tablet and start producing concept images.

The Lascivious Broom animatic

I feel this animatic needs alot more work, in terms of perspective, character design and environment detail. However, I can use it for timing issues when I came to produce the actual animation.

2D Animatic

'GNARLED'
2D Animatic

Final Storyboard

Here is my final storyboard. I've stumbled across a name for my animation which I think is very apt considering... the dictionary definition for 'Gnarled' is;
-adjective
1. (of trees) full of or covered with gnarls; bent; twisted.
2. having a rugged, weather-beaten appearance: a gnarled old sea captain.
3. crabby; cantankerous.

Therefore, presenting....

(Very) Rough Storyboard

Here is a draft version and first concept for my storyboard.
